Surf Camp Overview
Take advantage of this opportunity to surf the best waves of the Christchurch surf region while you receive in-depth surf coaching. The camp is mobile to ensure you get to surf the best conditions possible.
The Kaikoura coast will be our target destination, there is a wide variety of surf spots in a small area and we have enjoyed great conditions on our last 3 camps here.
My aim is to help you take your surfing to the next level over the 5 days. So if that’s something you’d like to do, I’m sure you’ll enjoy meeting and hanging out with some other surfers of the same level with similar goals.
The coaching is structured and I’ve honed the material over several other camps. Everything is designed for the ‘average’ surfer who may have started later than they would have liked. It’s about fun and new surfing experiences.
You will improve your surfing via theory sessions, land-based simulations, video coaching and tips on mindset.
Itinerary
Day 1: We will meet as a group in Christchurch around 10am, load up the Van with our surfboards and gear and head for Kaikoura or wherever the waves are best! We will get to know each other, I’ll figure out where your surfing is at and we’ll hopefully squeeze 2 sessions in once at our destination.
Day 2 – 4: 3 full days of continuous surfing and coaching. In between sessions we’ll check footage and go through theory lessons while chilling out. We can also check out local attractions and good food spots etc.
Day 5: We’ll fit in a couple of surf sessions before heading back to Christchurch Airport around 2pm.
What Level are these Surf Camps for?
The Christchurch surf coaching camp is for Level 3 and Level 4 surfers, you can check your level here.

The Details
The Location will depend on where the best surf is. My preference is to run it in the Kaikoura area as there are a variety of different waves and we can aim to find somewhere uncrowded. If Kaikoura doesn’t look surf-able we will base ourselves somewhere else such as Christchurch or even the West Coast. After watching the forecasts I will lock in the most suitable venue in the week before the camp.
Accommodation: I will hire either a beach house or cabins for the 4 nights accommodation. The price is based on twin share accommodation, so if you want a private room there may be an additional charge. But this will depend on the beach house setup, if there are many rooms no extra charge will be needed. We will use the accommodation as the base for all the training sessions and for hanging out between surfs. You will be able to use the kitchen facilities for meals.
Transport: As mentioned above, transport from Christchurch to the camp’s location and throughout the camp is included. If you live in Christchurch and wish to drive yourself, that is fine.
You will need to bring your own board(s) and wetsuit (3/2 steamer should be perfect this time of year, 4/3 if you feel the cold). Some of the spots are rocky, so if you aren’t used to rocky breaks, some booties would be a good idea too. Bring anything else you’d usually take on a surf mission, clothes you can do some exercises in, and suitable shoes for the skateboard sessions.
There will be a maximum of 6 people to ensure quality coaching.

FAQ
What happens if the waves are no good?
It’s nice to have perfect waves for the camp but it isn’t vital. You’ll find that your main insights will come during the land-based sessions and even if the waves aren’t so great you’ll still come away with a solid plan for improving. People sometimes think they need to be filmed in great waves, surfing at their very best for video coaching to be worthwhile. But, that’s not the case. Average or small waves will often give a truer picture of your issues.
This camp is mobile and I’ll do everything I can to find good waves.
Typically, what kind of waves are you looking for?
Waves that are suitable for the level of the surfers on the camp. We want conditions that will allow us to get good footage of all aspects of your surfing. You won’t be pushed out in conditions that are far beyond your comfort zone, but you can attempt more challenging conditions with support if you’re keen.
Do you sometimes have quite a difference in the surfing ability of the group?
The camps are grouped by level as much as possible. It doesn’t matter if you are the most or least skilled surfer on the camp, you will still get coaching focused on your needs and suitable waves to surf in.
Bookings
To secure a space on the trip, a 50% deposit of $450 will be needed, with the balance due 1 month before the camp. There is a maximum of 6 people, so I’d recommend getting in early and also booking flights to Christchurch if needed.
